Cleaning of upholstery (furniture) is far more complex than one might imagine. Gone are the days when you either had Cotton Velvet, Cotton Print, Satin Brocade, Wool, and Dralon.

The variety of blends available to create beautiful looking fabrics are endless. Within this endless variety is also the problems that can be created if cleaning is undertaken using the wrong chemistry or protocol.

Which is why it requires a trained and experienced technician to safely clean your upholstery. The wrong chemistry may provide you with a clean sofa, but it can begin a premature ageing process.

Specialist Upholstery Cleaning Case Study

I was required to clean a very large suite of furniture that the client thought was crushed velvet. It was supplied from a company called Dansk. You can view their sofas at www.dansk.co.uk

The fabric was not dissimilar to the one pictured above. It has the look of a crushed velvet. In order to make sure that I cleaned it safely and effectively, I did some research and tests. My tests suggested that it was not in fact a Cotton crushed velvet. My further research confirmed that it was in fact a very good crushed velvet lookalike made from a synthetic material.

This was important to know because the chemical I could use on the synthetic fabric is not the same as the one I would use on a Cotton velvet. Nor in fact would I use the same cleaning protocol.

Also the rinse agent used was necessary to neutralise the cleaning chemical. This is an important part of the cleaning process. The chemicals used need to be able to be neutralised. Many cheaper chemicals are buffered, this means they resist alteration (or in the case of cleaning, neutralising). It would be similar to washing your hair and not rinsing the shampoo out.

This is why cleaning of upholstery requires a trained and certified specialist.
