The types of upholstery materials we can clean is endless – leather, dralon, flocked, tapestry, flat weave, velvet, silk, and all points in between. There is such a proliferation of fabrics it is hard to keep pace.
Many modern fabrics contain viscose in varying percentages. Some are often combinations of Modacrylics, Dacron, Cotton, Polyester, Viscose, Linen and so on. Each have their own complications when cleaning and KD Cleaning Specialists are fully trained to understand the types of materials and what cleaning process works best. We provide the right process because we have invested in the appropriate machinery. Whether it needs a wet clean or a dry clean, we can do it.
The main areas that usually get dirty on upholstery are the tops of the back cushions where our heads lay, and the ends of the armrests. This is due to natural hair and hand oils which gets transferred onto our furniture
Limitations to Cleaning
There are some types of issues that cannot be totally rectified with upholstery cleaning. On lighter fabrics, including leather, a process called crocking can occur. This means that darker fabrics rubbing across the upholstered fabric causes a slow but gradual transfer of dye. This means that the seat cushions suffer from dye transfer, as well as wear and colour fading. Dye transfer by crocking cannot be totally removed, and we can’t change the effects of fading and wear. This should be considered when requesting our upholstery cleaning service. Regular cleaning, rather than once every five years will help to redress the balance.
Stain Protection Service
Stain protection can be included in our cleaning service to protect your upholstery from permanent staining.
Our product coats the fibres with a protective layer that prevents stains from penetrating and binding itself to them. Adding stain protection also provides you with a window of opportunity to get the stain up before it dries.
As stain protection is worn off at a rate of approximately 30% per year and its ability to prevent staining is reduced by that amount also, it needs to be reapplied regularly. We recommend cleaning upholstery annually and therefore you have stain protection reapplied annually.
