It’s not every day you get asked to clean such a beautiful work of art. Such beautiful intricate weaving and colours. I was unable to ask about its history, but suffice to say the family’s history goes back to colonial India and the Raj.
Specialist Antique Rug Cleaning Case Study
A truly stunning rug, and as you can see, all the vibrancy of its colours have been restored following cleaning. The biggest concern with this rug was if the colours were going to run. So a lot of testing was carried out before I set about cleaning it.
The first stage of cleaning is known as “dusting”. This does not involve soft yellow cloths. This is where the rug is beaten face down with a mechanical beater. This is to get all of the years of dirt, dust, and grit from out between the tufts. With such a tightly woven rug as this one, it takes a really long time. The dusting can remove kilos of dirt from a large area rug.
The second stage of dusting we call “air dusting”. This is where the rug is now face side up. We use a special tool and high powered blower to force air between the tufts to blast out any remaining fine dust.
These two stages are essential for the rug to be thoroughly cleaned. If water in any form were added to the rug prior to this being carried out, the water would mix with the dirt, dust, and grit to create a sticky sludge that would be very hard to remove.
