About Specialist Rugs

Silk, Woven, Oriental, or Persian rugs require specialised cleaning techniques at which KD Cleaning Specialists are experts.

Quality, woven rugs need special attention and poor handling could cause more harm than good. Whether your rug is worth a few hundred pounds or tens of thousands of pounds, you can be assured that our specialist cleaning will produce the best possible results.

In order to do this, we take your rug to our workshop. It is not possible to give a rug the time and attention it deserves in your own home as it needs somewhere it can be left to dry without being walked on.

Specialist rugs follow different cleaning processes.

Oriental Rugs

First, we place the rug upside down on a clean tarpaulin and thoroughly beat it, spending considerable time on this process alone. This is because the pile of hand woven or knotted rugs is particularly tight, meaning the abrasive dirt which turns to sands at the base of the pile can’t be removed with regular vacuuming. We can get as much as half a bucket of sand out of a large area rug this way.Next, we vacuum the face pile across all points of the compass.

If there are stains or marks, we then then treat these with specialist products. Some will not come out, particularly with Chinese rugs. The dyes in Chinese Rugs are very delicate, so we have to be very careful what stain removers we use in these circumstances.

The rug is then hand shampooed with a specially formulated shampoo for Oriental rugs.

It is then ‘Rinse extracted’ with a neutralising conditioner or submersed depending upon the rug’s suitability. If the fringes are heavily soiled, we treat them with a special cleaner that restores them back to their natural colour. This is an optional treatment as some clients prefer the aged look of fading fringes.

Following this stage, we put air movers across the rug to help speed up the drying process. This is because of the density of the pile and its moisture retaining properties.

Silk & Cotton Rugs

We dry clean Silk and Cotton rugs and those susceptible to colour bleed. Unfortunately this limits the stain removing process, as most stain removers are water based. As products are more expensive, this is also reflected in the service charge.

Stain Protection Service

Stain protection can be included in our cleaning service to protect your carpet from permanent staining.

Our product coats the fibres with a protective layer that prevents stains from penetrating and binding itself to them. Adding stain protection also provides you with a window of opportunity to get the stain up before it dries.

As stain protection is walked off at a rate of approximately 30% per year and its ability to prevent staining is reduced by that amount also, it needs to be reapplied regularly. We recommend cleaning rugs annually and therefore you have stain protection reapplied annually.
