Sadly, these very same qualities that make it a desirable choice for our homes are the reason that leather can be neglected. Depending upon your type of leather, it can need much more care than fabric.
Care kits supplied when you bought your furniture are rarely any good, and some have products that can be harmful to your leather over time.
It is vital that leather is cleaned and protected regularly regardless of the type of leather. Ideally once a year is good practice, but some leather types may require three monthly or even monthly protection treatments. Leather can be split into three basic groups, although there are variants in all categories. There is Aniline, Pigmented, and Nubuck. All three types and their variants, require different cleaning protocols and products to clean them effectively and safely.
Cleaning & Protection Process
Cleaning leather refers to cleaning away a build up of dirt and soiling, and with some leather types this may also go so far as to include the removal of dye transfer (colour staining caused by jeans and/or dark materials). This cannot be guaranteed however due to the huge variation in leather finishes and the length of time it may have been present. Whatever type of leather you have, your leather will always have a leather protector applied to it following cleaning as part of our cleaning package. This helps to protect the leather by providing a barrier to stains and future dirt ingress.
Restoration & Repair
Leather repairs include cuts, tears, scratches and burns/holes. The repairs are made and then colour matched to blend with existing colour. It also may be necessary to re-colour where there has been an ink stain.
Leather restoration includes re-colouring/re-dyeing whole panels or suites of furniture and in many cases re-hydrating the leather. Re-colouring may be necessary due to a very bad stain/spillage, or you may decide you want your furniture to be a different colour. Oily patches on absorbent types of leather (typically head contact areas) often need re-colouring following oil/grease removal.
