Cleaning Success

For a successful clean to be undertaken, it has long been understood that there are four key elements to a successful clean. They are:-

These are arranged into an acronym of TACT to make them easier to remember.

The Temperature affects the effectiveness of the cleaning solution (e.g. greasy saucepans clean better with very hot soapy water rather than just warm soapy water). It was stated that for every increase of 10 degrees C over 50 degrees doubled the cleaning efficiency of the cleaning solution.

Agitation is the mechanical massaging of the cleaning solution into the fibres to help release the soiling. This can be done by hand or by appropriate machines.

Chemical refers simply to the choice of appropriate chemical suited to the task in hand. The quality, performance and appropriate selection of the correct chemical is critical to a successful and safe clean.

Time refers to the amount of dwell time the solution should be allowed to have. Many chemicals require 10-15 minutes. During this time the appropriate chemical is working on the soiling to help loosen it from the fibres.

However, there have been some important changes to the thinking regarding a successful clean and what it takes to achieve it. The reason for the re-think is that although the Temperature, Agitation, and Time have importance, they are not the most significant parts of the process.

You will see in the accompanying pie chart that there has been another element added to TACT. This is the “O” for Operator. Because the cleaning is not an automated process like a washing machine, the presence of an equipment Operator is obviously to be included.

The Operator can have a massive influence on the end result of the clean. It is imperative that the Operator is professionally trained and has the right qualifications, skills and experience.

So, whereas before it was felt that all five elements were equally important. Now it is clear that the biggest contributing factors to a safe and successful clean are down to the Operators’ skill and experience along with his selection of the right chemicals.
